Welcome from Sixth Form
Welcome to the Sixth Form.
The Sixth Form at St Mary’s is a very special place to complete your school education.
We provide students with an excellent academic education, strong pastoral care and a wide range of enrichment and leadership opportunities. You will choose to study three (occasionally four) subjects from a total of 24 A levels, as well as one BTEC in Food and Nutrition. With such a large choice, you will be able to study the subjects that you are really interested in. We guarantee small class sizes, which means you will receive personalised learning from passionate teachers who love their subjects. All students in Year 12 have the opportunity to study for the Extended Project Qualification, a supported, independent project worth half an A level.
We pride ourselves in getting to know all girls really well so that we can help you pastorally to navigate the issues and opportunities that might arise over the two years in Years 12 and 13. At the heart of the Sixth Form are the tutor groups, which are mixed vertically, and meet at the beginning and end of each day. All Sixth Form tutors are highly experienced in working with students at this stage of their school career, and you will get to know your tutor really well, as they work with you to support all areas of your Sixth Form life, whether it be your A level studies, extracurricular activities, or a successful transition to higher education.
The Sixth Form office has an open-door policy, and Mrs Francisco, Assistant Head of Sixth Form, will work with you to give you pastoral support throughout your two years.
The co-curricular and enrichment activities we offer help to provide a balance to your academic studies. This includes a range of clubs such as Med Soc, Current Affairs Club and Law Discussion Group. Our varied sports programme means that you will find an activity to suit your abilities and preferences, whether that is for competitive team sports or doing something fun to keep fit. We provide opportunities for you to achieve success, build leadership skills and work as part of a team, through the Duke of Edinburgh Award (Bronze through to Gold), Young Enterprise and a compulsory Community Service Learning Programme in Year 12. We will prepare you thoroughly for life after school and help you to choose the best courses and universities to suit your aspirations, as well as providing preparation for interviews and supporting degree and higher apprenticeship applications.
The Sixth Form is housed in the beautiful Cedar House, a purpose-built building with classrooms, common room and study room. The building is flooded with natural light and adjoins a courtyard garden for use in the warmer months. The common room, complete with a small kitchen area, provides a space for you to relax, to eat, and to hang out with friends. The silent study room is the perfect place to work during your study periods, with networked computers and a printer.
In the Sixth Form, you will have greater independence, and we will help you to manage your time effectively, as your timetable includes study periods for independent learning. In Year 13 you will be allowed to go home early one afternoon a week, if you have no lessons and your grades are good. Alongside this freedom comes increased responsibility as we encourage students to take on leadership roles in the school, not only as part of the Head Girl Team but also as prefects supporting areas the school such as charities, sports and running Eco Council.
When you join the Sixth Form at St Mary’s, you join a vibrant and supportive community that enables you to achieve their best in their studies and extra-curricular activities. We look forward to working with you.
Mrs Katie Cork, Head of Sixth Form
