Academic Approach

At St Mary’s, we provide an ambitious and aspirational education that challenges and supports every pupil to achieve their personal best. Our curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, develop confidence and foster a lifelong love of learning.

Alongside strong subject knowledge, we place a particular emphasis on literacy, numeracy and digital literacy, ensuring pupils develop the foundations needed for future success.

Creating a culture of academic success comes through a focus on showing pupils how to learn and focusing on the development of the character values that we hold central to our community. We support and challenge our pupils to be ambitious, to be adventurous through the pursuit of something new, to be resilient through their learning journey, learning what success looks like through failure and how success is within everyone’s grasp.

We believe that challenge should be planned, not accidental. Learning is carefully sequenced to build understanding over time, encouraging pupils to think critically, solve problems and make meaningful connections across the curriculum. Every pupil is encouraged to think deeply, work hard and aim high, with a curriculum that supports all learners while placing no ceiling on achievement. We also teach pupils that mistakes are a valuable part of learning, helping them develop resilience, confidence and a growth mindset.

Through high-quality teaching, purposeful feedback and the explicit teaching of study skills, pupils learn how to reflect on their progress, communicate effectively and take increasing ownership of their learning. Beyond the classroom, a wide range of enrichment opportunities broadens horizons, nurtures individual interests and enables pupils to apply their learning in new and unfamiliar contexts.

Our aim is to equip every pupil with the knowledge, confidence and character to thrive in an increasingly digital, interconnected and rapidly changing world.

Personalised Learning Journey

Knowing each pupil means that challenge in work is adapted for each individual and we provide opportunities for them to excel with the support of their teachers who know them, what they can achieve and how they can thrive. Our classes are purposefully small, creating opportunities for pupils to engage fully with their learning and to build strong relationships with their teachers. Our staff are dedicated members of our community who are passionate about bringing the best out in pupils through a varied and interesting curriculum offering.

Key Stage 3 Curriculum

We provide a broad, balanced and academically ambitious curriculum that ensures every pupil experiences success across a diverse range of subjects, including the expressive arts, humanities, modern foreign languages and STEM. Physical Education and PSHCE play an equally important role, developing healthy, confident and well-rounded young people.

To support a successful transition into secondary education, Year 7 pupils follow our SPARKLERS study skills and literacy curriculum. Through carefully sequenced lessons, pupils develop an understanding of how learning happens, exploring concepts such as memory, retrieval practice and metacognition. By learning how to learn, pupils become increasingly independent, reflective and confident learners, equipped with the strategies needed to thrive across the curriculum and beyond.

Key Stage 4 Curriculum

At GCSE, pupils follow a broad and balanced curriculum that combines academic rigour with individual choice. All pupils study English Language, English Literature, Mathematics and two separate science GCSEs, providing strong foundations for further study.

Alongside these core subjects, pupils select additional GCSE options from a wide range of courses spanning STEM, the humanities, creative arts and applied disciplines. Subjects such as Business Studies, Media Studies, Drama, Dance, Food and Nutrition, GCSE Physical Education and Textiles Design enable pupils to pursue their interests while maintaining breadth in their studies.

GCSE option blocks are designed around pupil preferences wherever possible, allowing pupils to create a personalised programme that reflects their strengths, ambitions and curiosity. Most pupils study nine GCSEs, with some choosing to take a tenth through Further Mathematics.

Core PE and PSHCE remain important parts of a balanced curriculum, supporting pupils’ wellbeing, personal development and preparation for life beyond school. The Year 10 SPARKS programme supports the transition to GCSE study, building on the foundations established through Year 7 SPARKLERS. Pupils develop effective study habits, revision techniques and metacognitive strategies, helping them become confident, independent and resilient learners as they begin their GCSE courses.

Our aim is to ensure that every pupil is appropriately challenged and supported, following a programme that enables them to flourish academically and prepares them for the transition to St Mary’s Sixth Form and beyond.

Academic Stretch and Challenge

At St Mary’s, academic challenge extends well beyond the classroom. We believe that intellectual curiosity should be actively nurtured and that all pupils should be encouraged to explore ideas and engage with the world around them.

Our co-curricular programme includes a wide range of academic clubs, and enrichment opportunities that inspire pupils to think beyond the boundaries of individual subjects. Whether through Robotics Club, Politics Club, or specialist masterclasses led by our expert teachers, pupils are encouraged to deepen their understanding, develop new interests and embrace academic challenge.

A key part of this provision is our Academic Scholars’ Programme, which is open to Academic Scholars and other highly able pupils. The programme provides opportunities to explore complex ideas and contemporary issues beyond the curriculum, fostering intellectual curiosity, critical thinking and meaningful discussion. Through debate, reflection and enquiry, pupils engage with local and global challenges, considering different perspectives and developing informed viewpoints. Through projects, presentations and academic showcases, they develop the confidence, resilience and scholarly habits that will support success both at St Mary’s and beyond.

Learners are also encouraged to enter national and international competitions, across a range of subjects, with great success across STEM Olympiads, essay competitions and Modern Foreign Language translation competitions, to name a few.
