Our House System

The House System at St Mary’s is steeped in the traditions of the school with each house named after prominent figures in St Mary’s rich 150-year history. The houses, Latham, Butler, Kirk and Temple West, each with their own colour, come to life at regular intervals throughout the school year. Competition hots up, and community spirit builds, in the run-up to and during the key house events – the infamous Christmas Quiz and Sports Day.

Throughout the year, other house events include drama, bake off, netball, swimming, debating, science, photography, and dance.

All students have a role to play in the success of their house by collecting praise points in lessons – awarded when students embrace our main school values. Students now also have the opportunity to earn accolades (and their accompanying praise points). An accolade can be earned in every subject in the curriculum, and students work towards the accolades in subjects in which they excel or are passionate.

The House System brings with it many benefits to the overall experience at St Mary’s. It presents opportunities for students to shape their school experience based on their interests, and future goals. The key benefits include:

  • Broadening friendship groups across year groups.
  • Creating leadership opportunities.
  • Fostering a sense of community and support for one another.
  • Collaboration – giving students of all ages the opportunity to work together, creating a truly cohesive environment.
  • Healthy competition – competition is good, it drives our students to improve, improves collegiality and teaches us how to fail forwards.

All girls in the school community are encouraged to be actively involved in their house, and the activities, either as a supporter or competitor. Which event will your daughter choose?!
