Learning for Success in Nursery School and Reception

At St Mary’s, academic rigor is a priority. As an independent school following National Curriculum guidelines, we have the additional freedom to build an exciting and innovative curriculum that fits the needs of our girls based on their collective interests as well as their academic strengths and weaknesses. Our adjoined Nursery and Reception classrooms allow us the option of operating as an integrated unit where we can meet individual needs. For example Nursery girls who are ready for more challenge can join Reception for maths and phonics and where some of our Reception girls can join Year 1 for mental maths, reading and phonics.

From Nursery, the girls take part in daily mathematics, English, phonics and reading sessions and enjoy specialist teaching in French, music, ballet, PE and Forest School throughout the week. Small class sizes, with two teachers and at least two full time members of support staff, mean that we know each student individually – her strengths, weaknesses and what type of learner she, and can deliver teaching and experiences accordingly. This bespoke approach to learning ensures individual academic success from day one.

There is also a range of enrichment activities available to our Nursery and Reception girls including lunchtime and after school clubs such as gymnastics, art and sports skills. Engagement in these builds important skills including teamwork, commitment, and problem solving which contribute to overall success. We also have a variety of interesting external visitors, and school trips throughout the year to enhance our girls’ learning outside of the classroom.

Our aim is that when the girls reach the end of Reception, they feel successful, resilient and confident, ready for the move up to Year 1.
