PSHCEE

On Tuesday 6th January, students enjoyed a full day of PSHCEE! Students attended 4 different talks from external speakers, each relating to a different aspect of our theme: Relationships – Rights and Respect.

The four talks were:

  • Naomi Fawcitt from the Ministry of Justice and Equality and Human Rights Commission talked about her career and the importance of equality and human rights in the law. She also discussed the prison and sentencing system and asked students interesting and deep-reaching questions, such as what they would do to fix the prison space crisis.
  • Joy, Jules and Teddy from the LGBTQ+ Charity Just Like Us all shared their personal stories about coming out and discovering their true selves. They explained a variety of confusing terminology and had honest conversations about complex issues including transitioning genders.
  • Laura from Rabbits Relationships held four different talks throughout the day, each one about a different aspect of growing up or relationships. Students not only learnt a lot in this session but laughed too, as her engaging manner made students comfortable to discuss potentially awkward subjects.
  • Finally, Rebecca from Wycombe Women’s Aid spoke to all year groups about unhealthy relationships. Her talk included hugely important, but very saddening, topics such as types of coercive control in teenage relationships.

The day was a huge success, with initial student and staff feedback highlighting how much everyone enjoyed the day as well as how much was learnt. We look forward to continuing to welcome speakers into our school for PSHCEE this term and next year, as their lived experiences and specialities add an extra level to our curriculum and really allow students to see the subject as something which extends beyond the classroom and into the real world.
